First Emotions

Sneak peek with us into the backstage of the Swiss artist Vendredi sur Mer where we talked with her about her latest album “Premier Émois”.

The Swiss singer Charline Mignot, better known as Vendredi sur Mer, believes in the power of doing things for the first time. That’s why she named her last album “Premiers Émois” (First Emotions). The first line that we hear in the record will stay with us through the whole record: I wish time stops. The blooming artist has conquered the world of music with her dreamy and evocative music. During her visit to Montreal, we talked with her before her show and she shared with us her favorite things, her rituals and creative influences.

Do you have any ritual before doing a concert?

In general, I’m really apathetic, my heart is protecting itself before the intensity of a show! I like to focus on myself and listen to music quietly.

How do you decide your look for the concert?

It depends on my mood! Sometimes sportswear with sneakers, comfy vibes. Sometimes I prefer to feel more elegant: shiny clothes with high heels. I always decide a few hours before the show depending on how I feel.

Are you calm before a show?

Yeah, the pressure is mounting until the beginning of the show, a real-time bomb!

How do you define your last album? What is the concept behind it?

It’s my diary. It’s intrusive and personal... Kind of healing for me! I like to think that it could be therapeutic for other people when they listen to it.

How do you define the aesthetic of your album?

It’s inspired by the 70s & the 80s. I wish I could live in those decades. I have the feeling that those periods were more sensual and carnal.

You started as a photographer, were you always a creative kid?

Yes! I always had access to art, paintings, photography, drama, and music. I have to thank my parents. I always love to write. I took drama classes when I was 9 years old. So in a way, I’ve been performing on a stage as an actress before a musician!

Which decades/artists influenced you?

I like the 80s cinema. I really enjoy Eric Rohmer’s movies! Musically speaking, I enjoy artists from the 80s to nowadays. I love several and different artists from Queen to Touré Kunda, not forgetting Renaud!

Do you like to travel? Do your trips inspire your music?

I love it! It’s really inspiring. I like to discover new cities, new cultures… Opening up to the world to enrich myself. I don’t know any artist who doesn’t need to go out of his everyday life. Traveling is essential for creativity!

Do you associate your music with a color, smell or anything else?

More to images, I write with my imagination a lot, like I imagine atmospheres, spaces, life scenes and obviously real facts that happened to me.

What are your favorite instruments to use in your music?

Flutes and violins! It makes me feel like in a movie soundtrack… It’s languorous and sad at the same time, a lot of images come to mind!

How you will describe your music?

Intense, maybe…

What is your life mantra?

Live life to the fullest and always do whatever I like.

What is the best plan for a Saturday night?

Netflix & chill...Just kidding (lol). I love to be on stage!

Favorite things right now?

I read a lot of those days during the tour and I listen to a lot of music. I also like to have a couple of drinks after the show!

What are your plans for the future?

To do whatever I want to do, forever!
